Strange New Attraction Unveiled in West Edinburgh
25/06/08
Edinburgh Park developer, New Edinburgh Limited (NEL) has unveiled an unusual new sculpture - Strange Attractor IV.
The distinctive piece is prominently positioned adjacent to the B&Q Warehouse in West Edinburgh, attracting attention from drivers approaching the Hermiston Gait roundabout.
Commissioned by NEL, the sculpture was created by Spanish-based artist Alastair White, aka 'Oss'. He has used stainless steel to construct 'sails' that move randomly to create a fascinating and complex visual display, which attracts the attention of its audience.
White commented: "My background in engineering has been the strongest influence in my creative experience. The amazing achievements of science and technology are an everlasting fund of awe and wonder for me, which inspire me to create my “mobiles.” I work with the material, stainless steel, with my own hands so I can learn more about its character and its attributes and that process contributes to the growth of subsequent ideas and sculptures."
Pamela Grant, development director at NEL welcomes the piece: "Strange Attractor IV is an exciting creation and we're very pleased final result. This extraordinary sculpture has an immediate visual impact on those using the Hermiston Gait roundabout, making it an interesting focal point for drivers on their daily commute."
The sculpture joins other public art projects commissioned by NEL, including a stained glass window at Edinburgh Park's dedicated railway station, poetry bus shelters and some of Scotland’s most acclaimed 20th century poets in the shape of 12 bronze herms.
